Is the Kia Tasman good at towing?

The 2025 Kia Tasman enters the Australian dual-cab ute market with impressive towing capabilities, offering a braked towing capacity of up to 3,500 kg across all variants. This positions it competitively alongside established models like the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, and Nissan Navara.

Engine Options

2.2L Turbo-Diesel

The Tasman’s 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine delivers 154 kW at 3,800 rpm and 440 Nm of torque from 1,750 rpm . This torque output is sustained over a 1,000 rpm band (1,750–2,750 rpm), facilitating consistent towing performance. An 8-speed automatic transmission aids in maintaining optimal engine performance across various driving conditions.

2.5L Turbo Petrol

The 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine produces 281 hp and 421 Nm of torque. While offering higher horsepower, its torque output is slightly lower than the diesel variant, which may influence towing efficiency, especially under heavy loads. This engine also pairs with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Ford Ranger V63.0 Diesel1846001,750–2,25010-speed auto

While the Ranger has a relatively small torque range, the bi-turbo in the 2L and V6 3L, especially when combined with the 10-speed auto, mean the Ford is able to stay within optimal torque range.

The Ford Ranger is best-in-class at towing, but the Kia Tasman’s torque band is comparable to the majority of its competitors, providing a broad range for effective towing. Its 8-speed transmission offers more gear ratios than stalwarts like the D-Max and Navara, enhancing towing performance beyond the expectations of an engine with its displacement.

Third Party Tow Tests

Auto journalists are yet to get their hands on a Tasman for tow tests, but we will update this post once they do.
